Family Reunion
Day 1.
The smell of New Year's Eve fireworks smoke in my hair annoyed me as soon as I opened my eyes. It was already 10:30 in the morning and I can hear familiar voices outside my window. It was our grand family reunion today. In my mom's side of the clan, it's been a tradition. And because I don't want my mom to take out all her life's frustrations on me again, I got up and tried to find things to do just to show that I'm welcoming the New Year with a new home attitude.
I made my bed, brushed my teeth and folded the clothes that have been sitting on our sofa for the past three days. Then, I took a shower, got dressed and greeted everyone a happy New Year.
Nothing has changed much when it comes to my uncles and aunts but my cousins have changed a lot. It really didn't surprise me considering I don't have a problem with people changing and everything. I had a great time telling stories with them and remembering the old times. Only this time, everything happened over one bottle of The Bar, a pack of cigarettes and two bags of junk food. This is what I love about my cousins from my mom's side of the family. They never judge. They don't care about financial status or work. When I'm with them, it's always about the fun times. Nothing really serious. And I can actually be myself with them. It's not that I hate my cousins from my dad's side of the clan. I can talk to them and all but not really about crazily shallow stuff that my cousins from my mom's side and I laugh about. I just realized that I really missed them after not seeing them for one whole year.
Aside from the fun catch-up bonding with my cousins, the elders of the clan had a little bit of an episode. I really didn't get what happened but I think it was about resolving the gap created by a broken marriage between one of my uncles and aunts. Tears fell and razor-sharp words came out but I guess in our family, nothing ever stays ruined. I can't say that my uncle is now officially courting his ex-wife again but I'm really hoping that they'll work things out. After all, family is still family.
In between food and silly jokes, I can really say that today was a great day. Nothing outlandish really happened but the moments of shared laughter are enough for me to say that our family started the New Year with a blast.
Cheers to tomorrow and the rest of 2012!
