My Cousin's Sort of a Shotgun Wedding
Day 3.
I woke up to the sound of my mom's siren call. Actually, that's just my beautified term for verbal assault. As soon as I opened my eyes, she started whining about how useless I am as a daughter and threatened me with her usual I'm-gonna-leave-you-to-rot-in-this-godforsaken-place crap. I tried sleeping again considering I slept at like 2 AM last night because I just found out that my brother has Starcraft Brood War in his computer - a game that I've been dying to play for like forever. When my mom started trying to break our bedroom wall down by closing the door with brute force, I got out of bed and went to the bathroom. As stupid as it sounds, I did try sleeping in there but my mom just won't shut up. In the end, I just took a shower and faced my laptop just like any other day only to be harassed again by my mom who never seems to run out of negative things to say about me. I closed my laptop without shutting it down properly - my normal response to an unbelievably annoying stimulus. I went to hide in my aunt's place upstairs (they live in our house's third floor) so my mom won't see my shadow again.
At lunchtime, I found our dining room full of visitors who I just saw two days ago and I remembered that there's something happening today. After eating lunch, I went to my make-up guru sister to get my face and hair done while waiting for the golden yellow gown my mom rented from some shop somewhere in Signal Village. I didn't have a problem with my gown. It actually fit without making me look like a pregnant teenager who just got kicked out of high school for bad behavior. It was my sister who sucked in all the day's frustrations. It turns out that the shop my mom rented our gowns from didn't really live up to the agreement of finishing the gowns at 9 AM. As a result, we were 30 minutes late for the wedding. The officiating priest whined a little about it and the matter was out the window.
The reception happened at Max's Restaurant, Shaw Boulevard. The place is small but all the visitors perfectly fit in. I guess only the closest friends, family and relatives came so there's really no issue with the venue being small. The food was great and I can say that of all the weddings I attended, this is the one that actually satisfied my big appetite. I also tried catching the bride's bouquet but I guess it's not yet my time so someone in a nursing student uniform caught it.
Before totally retiring for the night, some of my co-teachers happened to pass by to ask how I was doing and why I wasn't in the meeting earlier so I told them about my being a bridesmaid in my cousin's wedding. We talked about the usual stuff at work, laughed a little about our encounters with hot men who turn out to be gay and discussed possible job opportunities after our contract with the school. Since we're going to start carrying our crosses again tomorrow, they had to say goodbye early.
I really don't know how to feel about this day. I obviously felt bad about my mom verbally assaulting me the moment I opened my eyes but the rest of the day just fell into place like a jigsaw puzzle finally completed. Well, I just want to say that I'm happy for my cousin Kuya Sonny for finally finding someone like Ate Anabelle. I wish them all the best in life and I'm looking forward to the birth of my cute nieces and nephews.
I guess this is really it.
I'm going back to work tomorrow.
God help me.
